Our History

Serving St. George Since 1911

Deep in St. George, Utah’s Historic District lies the oldest ongoing establishment in the area. In 1908, pioneer businessman Thomas Judd purchased a home built in 1876 from Joseph Bentley, whose family was running a small store out of their home at the time. Judd decided to build his own store out of adobe brick in 1911 and purchased the Bentley family’s inventory to open and operate what is still today Thomas Judd’s General Store Co.

The store sold good to the locals, most of whom were mostly farmers and ranchers and needed dry goods, hay, clothing, and groceries to feed their families. In 1922, 11 years after building the store, Thomas Judd passed away and the store was passed down to his son Joseph and then later to Tom Jr.

In 1982, Judd’s once was almost demolished due to the city wanting to create parking spaces for people coming into downtown. Thankfully, that was quickly avoided when Dr. Mark and Barbara Greene purchased the store and the Judd family’s old home to commence the “Green Gate Village” project which has bloomed into a tourist hotbed. After the Greene’s bought Judd’s General Store, Tom Judd Jr. continued to work there until his retirement in 1988.

Today, the store still preserves the original countertops, selves and nostalgia that Thomas Judd had brought to the St. George community in 1911. The store’s selection of retro, glass-bottled sodas, old school candies, ice cream, and soup have brought happiness to St. Georgians and visitors old and young. The 1946 gas pump still stands in front of the store making you feel like your walked back in time before you even step through the doors.
